Magnetic Stripes and Two Dimensional (2D) Bar Codes are the primary types of in machine readable technology in use on state issued drivers licenses and ID cards.  When buying an ID Checker, check the coverage map to see what type of reader (magnetic and/or bar code) is required for the IDs you normally check.  The CardVisor ID Checker can be purchased to just a magnetic card reader and field upgraded read 2D bar codes.  Below is an image of the back of a new Florida license which as of March 2004 added the 2D bar code.
